It’s Okay to Just Have Some Fun

Lisa says I never want to have fun anymore.

I’m always so serious, and working my plan and planning my work.

It is true.

I’m not sure if it’s just an ‘in your forties’ thing, or it’s just me, but I have a hard time just letting go enough to escape into a movie, or a book.

I never watch TV anymore.

Don’t play any video games, or iphone games, and hardly ever listen to the radio.

It’s usually motivational CDs in the car, extra emails if I have a few minutes to kill at an oil change, or in line at the grocery story.

Today I should have been weeding.

The HOA sent me a little nasty gram about some weeds that have grown over 3 inches on my side yard, and I had allotted myself three hours to do that today.

Lisa wanted me to go see Man of Steel with her.

I mulled it over in my head, and my first instinct was to stay committed to my landscaping plan.

I couldn’t imagine another Superman movie would be all that different from the others, and honestly, I just didn’t think it was a good use of my time.

Plus there are so many other things I could do more productive than sitting in a movie theater watching something written, produced and directed by someone else.

Like writing another book.  Or a screenplay. Or a song.

I felt brain fried this morning when I woke up.

I had my days budgeted down into fifteen minute segments last week working 10-12 hour days, and actually managed to get everything on my lists done.

That made me think that I should get ahead.  Move on some of the check off of items on next week’s list.

Another part me was thinking–you need to take it easy.

So I went against my rational hyper-responsible side and sat next to my Lisa, holding hands while the newest Man of Steel took the screen.

It was a great escape movie.

Much more intense than the old Christopher Reeve movies I remember as a kid, and the special effects were edge of the seat amazing.

Before the movie started, Lisa and were actually laughing and chatting about nothing really important or earth shattering.

Just having fun.

It is so easy to get so caught up in whatever it is you are focused on achieving–whether it is a career change, or an infertility cycle, or losing weight, that you forget to leave time for fun.

Those couple of hours in the world of Jor El and Kal El watching Superman kick General Zod’s butt while decimating a good chunk of New York City cleared my head, and refreshed my spirit.

I remembered that it’s okay to have fun.
