The Infertility Tribe

I have been reading a lot of Seth Godin blog posts lately and this quote got to me.

“You have everything you need to build something far bigger than yourself.”

This is from his book “Tribes” and it talks about how a tribe is a group of people connected to one another…and connected to an idea.

I’m part of the infertility tribe.

I have a shared interest in talking about things from  the perspective of a guy who has gone through infertility and my way of communicating is through this blog.

“You have everything you need to build something far bigger than yourself.”

This is so true of infertility.

We tend to focus on the things we don’t have going into the infertility journey–the diagnosis is very much about how low your count is, how poor your egg quality is, how awful your sperm morphology are…or in some cases how impossible it is that you might have a child.

But in some way, the couples I’ve met over the years have found their version of ‘everything they need’ to build something far bigger than themselves.

Maybe that meant doing multiple IVFs.

It other cases it required donor eggs, donor sperm, donor embyros or surrogacy.

Sometimes adoption.

No matter what the limitations, we do really have everything we need to build something bigger than ourselves.

It just requires that we constantly re-examine, redefine, and search within ourselves to find the building blocks that lead us to that ‘bigger” vision, and remember that we are never alone as long as we stay in touch with the infertility tribe.

  1. Amen! I am a regular blogger and I constantly use RESOLVE’s online community to post questions and contribute to discussions. It has helped me to cope.

In fact, there are times I probably spend too much time doing IF stuff online and need to tell myself to take a break–otherwise it starts becoming more harmful than helpful and I find myself getting more depressed than uplifted.
