She Won’t Need Me Like This For Long

Today our formerly frozen embryo graduated from 4th grade.

I can’t believe she is actually in the double digits.  It seems like yesterday she was birth day minus 8/12 months (you know the beta confirmation date 2 weeks after your transfer but technically 6 weeks after a normal  conception would have been calculated from, or something like that).

When she was first born, I was still writing and playing out a lot, and I wrote this song.

I can’t get it out of my head, so I thought I’d share it.

The time goes by way too fast.

Cherish it.

She Won’t Need You Like This For Long

3 a.m…she’s up again

To change and feed then try to get her back to sleep

Night and day both feel the same

Lord I never thought I’d drink this much caffeine

My mom and dad just smile every time that I complain

I swear they must be crazy saying “Enjoy this while you can”

She won’t need you like this for long

She won’t need you to sing those songs

Or read that book for the thousandth time

And look for signs of those sleepy eyes

She won’t need you to hold her hand

When she’s older around her friends

Yeah these moments will soon be gone

She won’t need you like this for long

First she talks and then she walks

And we thank God when she starts sleeping through the night

But the first time she said goodnight

Without me rocking her and singing lullabyes

I felt a little string inside my heart begin to break

I heard those words my parents said in those early sleepless days

She won’t need you like this for long

She won’t need you to sing those songs

Or read that book for the thousandth time

And look for signs of those sleepy eyes

She won’t need you to hold her hand

When she’s older around her friends

Yeah these moments will soon be gone

She won’t need you like this for long

Now I know why my parents cried on my graduation day

I treasure every second she says “Daddy can we play?”

She won’t need me like this for long

She won’t need me to sing those songs

Or read that book for the thousandth time

And look for signs of those sleepy eyes

She won’t need me to hold her hand

When she’s older around her friends

Yeah these moments will soon be gone

She won’t need me like this for long
